WHAT IS LIVE FROM LOCKDOWN?

Each week Colin Smith has been going live on youtube. We do a live Photoshop show. This includes tutorials, tips, challenges, prizes, Q+A and interaction in the chats.

This was started as a way for us to get away from the madness of the global lockdown for an hour a week. It s a time where the PhotoshopCAFE.com and the Youtube CAFE Crew Family all come together. This happens every Thursday at 1pm Pacific time.

This is a different format than the usual Tuesday tutorials and is more of an interactive format and we tend to go a little deeper into certain things as well as exploring multiple ways of doing things. The people attending these live events absolutely love it and they return every week for more.

Im going to share each weeks replays here

You really should join live if you can, its a LOT of fun and there are hundreds of us all coming together in community.

You can join the “live from lockdown” livestream here at 1Pm every Thursday (Its free)

In this Photoshop tutorial, Colin Smith shows the entire process of editing landscape photos, start to finish. This tutorial joins all the dots and shows the production pipeline for photo retouching and editing,

I have made tutorials on individual techniques (And I’ll link them all here). Rather than do small tutorials, I have put everything together so you can see how I actually retouch and edit a real photograph. This is a photo I shot with my DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone. It doesn’t matter what camera you use, the steps are the same. This video tutorial shows me working on the Wacom Cintiq 16. I did a review on the tablet here | Buy tablet here (This isn’t sponsored).

Here is the photo before (SOOC) Straight Out Of Camera

And here is the photo after my edits. (see it on Instagram)

There are a lot of techniques we go through for this image, but I really want you to concentrate on the way it all works together and the decision-making process. Unlike regular tutorials, where I am highlighting a single technique, this is an unrehearsed real-world approach to how I edit my photos every day. As anyone who has been here at the CAFE for a while knows, I love to share my tips and techniques with you, but I am first a working artist and secondarily an educator. Experimenting and practice is how I come up with my techniques. Some decisions aren’t right or wrong, they are subjective and really depend on your style and the mood you are trying to communicate.

If you aren’t happy with your edits right now, don’t worry. Keep practicing and in time things will begin to click. Please follow me on Instagram for regular updates that might help inspire you.

Individual tutorials for the techniques used in this tutorial

Here are tutorials for you to bookmark. If you do all these tutorials, you will build up the basic skills that can be combined to make any image look great.

Thanks for checking this out here at the cafe 🙂

DJI MAVIC 2 PRO REVIEW

DJI have just released 2 new drones. People have been waiting awhile for the Mavic 2 and they were delivered in 2 flavors:

  • DJI Mavic 2 PRO: Featuring a Hasselblad 20mp camera with 1″ sensor and 10-bit color for video.
  • DJI Mavic 2 Zoom: Featuring a optical zoom lens and a special feature called Dolly Zoom (Think Alfred Hitchcock).

This review is on the Mavic 2 Pro and includes examples of unprocessed video and photos from the new camera.

The Mavic 2 Pro drone with the Hasselblad is my weapon of choice. I have always liked the portability of the Mavic with the fold out arms and smaller remote, but I have preferred the camera on the Phantom 4 pro which is very impressive. Could it be that DJI have now combined both of these great qualities into a single drone? If that’s the case, I’m selling all my other drones and getting 2 of these. Check out the video and see if this is “the drone you are looking for” of not. I am analyzing photos and video and will be posting a follow up to this really soon where I compare the Phantom 4 PRO camera, to the Mavic 2 Pro’s camera.

In a rare move, DJI started shipping Mavics on announcement day and I can confirm it took less than a week for me to receive mine.

Introducing the DJI Phantom 4 Pro.

I have been fortunate to be testing a DJI Phantom 4 Pro, prototype and got to put it through its paces. I’ll just cut to the chase and tell you the big news. The Phantom 4 Professional has a completely new camera with a new sensor. It can now shoot 20mp photos and shoot 4k video (60fps) at 100 mb/s. It also has 360 degrees of obstacle avoidance and comes with a built in screen on the controller.

FAQ

Update: I have already seen a few questions (feel free to ask below in the comments). A big one.. Does it take the same batteries as the Phantom 4. A: Yes, it uses the same batteries and Propellers. There  is a higher capacity battery available, but the original P4 batteries work just fine too.

360 Degrees Obstacle Avoidance

At first sight, it looks just like the Phantom 4. But on closer examination, you can see read and sider sensors as well as the downward and front sensors. These all work in tandem to produce forward, backward and downward stereo vision.  Get this, the new front and rear sensors can see up to 30m (about 100 feet).  This enables the P4P to see and recognize objects in it’s flight path and to track or avoid objects and obstacles. It also has side IR sensors that can detect obstacles from 7m (23 feet). Because of this improved obstacle avoidance, it can now fly up to 31Mph with obstacle avoidance on (P-mode). This is up from 22mph on the Phantom 4. Top speed is still 45mph in sport mode.

phantom-4-pro-controller

The controller on the Phantom 4 Pro

The controller looks the same from the outside (except for the attached screen). it comes in 2 configs. One has the screen attached, 5.5 inch 1920×1080 1,000 cd/m2 display. This is about the size of an iPhone 7 plus and has a bright display. Its powered by android and has expandable storage by micro SD. It also has built in compass, GPS, speaker and microphone. The model I have been testing has the build in screen and I love it! No more attaching a mobile device (making sure it’s charged) and looking for cables. The fold down screen is attached firmly and can’t fall off like a phone or iPad. When you charge the controller, the screen is charged at the same time. It’s 2 items, the controller and the drone. Turn on the controller and the screen comes on and the app launches. Its quick and easy! For those of you who love your mobile devices and iPads etc, there is still a controller with BYOD (Bring your own display) option.

Another big thing with the controller is the ability to switch between 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz. This gives better signal in built up areas and also extends the range. (I’m guessing it’s using Occusync, Ill have to confirm). The max range is now rated at 4.3 miles (7km).

The Camera On the Phantom 4 Pro

Phantom4p-HDR

The big news for Photographers/Videographers is the camera, and it is big. The camera now sports a 1″ 20mp sensor (vs 1/2.3 12.4mp on the Phantom 4). The larger sensor (I’m told Sony sensor by a DJI rep) enables much sharper photos and video than before. You also have an adjustable Aperture as well as shutter speed and ISO. This enables you to get the best exposure, while maintaining the desired shutter speed. This is useful for things like maintaining the best shutter speed for video without the need from ND filters. You can blur, or freeze time.

phantom-4-pro-front-flying-camera

There are Auto, Manual Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority modes.

Two more really big things, the low light performance is amazing and mechanical shutter.

The ISO is now adjustable to 6400 for video and 12,800 for photographs. Don’t forget to see the video above to see this in action. I test the low light on video and photographs as well as do a side by side comparison with the Phantom 4 v Phantom 4 Pro.

Here is a panorama shot as ISO 12,800. Yes there is some noise, but it was practically dark when I shot this. I’m not sure if you have tried low light on a drone before? But it has always been almost impossible to get a usable shot.No more!

lab-5

Here are a couple more in low light with a less extreme ISO setting.

low light test DJI Phantom 4 pro low light test DJI Phantom 4 pro low light test DJI Phantom 4 pro

Rolling Shutter vs Mechanical Shutter

The mechanical shutter is also a big deal. You will notice less distortion in shooting photographs and especially in video. When your Phantom 4 is moving horizontally and rotating (yawing) the video is much smoother and there is significantly less distortion. See the video above to get a feel for the better movement.

The usual shooting modes are supported and the burst has been increased to 14 frames at full resolution.

The lens is a 84 degrees 24mm (35mm equ) with f2.8-f11 aperture.

Video modes

Here are the supported video modes (yes, you are reading correctly, it can shoot in H.264 and H.265 at 100Mbps at 4K in both!

See my DJI Mavic Pro review right here (RAW Image download at bottom of page)

A lot has happened in the portable drone world in the past week.

Last week, Go Pro announced their long awaited drone, called the Karma. A week later DJI cut them off at the pass with the DJI Mavic Pro. It was interesting to watch the GoPro CEO pull out the Karma from a bag in an (overly) dramatic way while shouting like a man who had just discovered fire for the first time. Then a week later, in a (too much like) Apple style keynote, DJI pulled a bag out on stage and then as if to stick it to goPro, said, “no it’s not in the bag”, and proceeded to pull it out of his back pocket.  Watch the live events here if you haven’t seen them, than continue for my head to head spec battle.

Go Pro live event

The Specs

Let’s look at the basic Drone specs first

karma vs mavic compare02

As you can see the Mavic beats the Karma in every one of these specs. Keep in mind, its illegal to fly beyond visual line of sight in the USA, so the range isn’t as important as you might think, the important thing is having a clean sharp image and signal it maximum legal range (Probably somewhere between 1000-2000 feet).

Also remember that at 40mph, the Mavic is in sport mode which means the enhanced sensors are disabled, so no optical flow or active track

Another disclaimer, you should be landing your aircraft at no lower than 20% battery, so expect closer to 20 mins flight on the mavis and maybe 15-18 on the Karma.

Size:

karma vs mavic compare03

Size Folded for transport

Karma: H:4.6″ W:16″  L:12″

Mavic: H:3.27″ W3.27″: L:7.8″

Here you can get a visual comparison of the sizes (The difference is to scale, but not actual size)

karma vs mavic compare04

karma vs mavic compare10 karma vs mavic compare11

At the end of the day, the camera is the most important part. How to the cameras compare? Karma comes without camera, but there are 2 package available, with the Hero 5 Black edition and the Session 5. It also supports existing Hero 4 cameras. For this shootout, we will use the Hero 5 Black, which is what I would recommend.

karma vs mavic compare05 karma vs mavic compare06

You can see that the Karma actually offers a lot more features on the camera. Then again, DJI has been making drones a lot longer, but GoPro have been making cameras a lot longer. I will do a comprehensive camera test in the near future. For now, Casey Neistat has done a comparison and the Mavic is “good enough” but not as sharp as the Phantom 4. It looks like the Hero 5 could possibly be sharper than the Mavic, but until I get a review unit I can’t conform, but check out the video here and see the comparison on the last part of the video. He doesn’t do a photography comparison, but I will do one as soon as I can. Im glad both shoot in RAW.

Michael Shainblum says Casey’s camera wasn’t focused and claims the Mavic is just as sharp as the Phantom 4.

Additional features

We have to discuss the unique things about each drone

Unique about the Karma

The Karma comes as a kit which includes the GoPro Grip. The camera and gimbal are removable (Inspire 1 style) and can be mounted to a handle called a grip. This allows for stabilized hand-held shooting. This is very similar to the DJI OSMO system. This does add a lot to the package and in some ways I like this better than OSMO because the camera has a screen and you can start shooting right away. The Osmo has to connect to a mobile device through wifi so you can see what you are shooting.

The controller on the GoPro Karma comes with a 5″ screen built in, so you don’t need to connect a mobile device to use the FPV on the drone (see what the drone is seeing)

It also comes with passenger mode. This allows a second person to connect to Karma through their mobile device and take control of the camera. This is a little bit like theInspire 1 second operator, except the Inspire 1 has a full 360 degrees of motion control where as the Karma only has 90 deg  tilt.

Unique about the Mavic

The big thing here is the sensors. Mavic has Optical Flow which allows for very stable indoor flight. It also has downward and forward facing sensors for obstacle avoidance and object tracking, just like on the Phantom 4. You can see that in operation on the Phantom 4 here (Almost identical to the Mavic). This Mavic can fly itself, and detect and follow an object while avoiding things like trees.

Price comparison

One of the big questions is price, and its not all simple here, with all the different options. Pricing update Mavic without controller is $749 and its batteries are $89

droneprices

I heard people say that the Mavic killed the Karma on price. I don’t agree, it depends.

The base model Karma is  $799. The base Mavic is $749  But without the controller the DJI Mavic can only fly to just over 250 feet using  a moblile device as the controller. With controller is $999

At $799 the Karma doesn’t have a camera If you already own a GoPro 4 or 5, then you are fine, so this is appealing to GoPro customers, however, if you need a camera, you can get a package that comes with the goPro Session 5 for $999. The exact same price as the Mavic with Controller.

So the pricing is $799 incomplete, $999 complete.

For an extra $100 you can get the Karma with a Hero 5 black edition that brings it to $1099. That’s $100 more than the Mavic, but not really. Don’t forget, you also need a mobile devide to fly the Mavic, but the Karma comes with a screen in the controller. Speaking of controllers, the Mavic is large enough to hold and iPhone 7plus.

karma vs mavic compare12

Karma will set you back $99 for extra batteries ($89 for Mavic), I recommend 3-4 batteries for some good flying.

The GoPro Karma also comes with a carry case (extra on the DJI). The big price difference is that the Karma comes with the Grip handle. A DJI Osmo will set you back $569. You can get a DJI osmo handle for $219 like I did and use your existing X3 or X5 camera on it. See my review here of the X5 on the Osmo. The camera on the Mavic isn’t detachable like the Inspire 1, so you will need a camera for the OSMO.

So? Which is better?

It really isn’t an easy answer, It really depends on what you want to do with it and what you already have.

My thoughts at the moment.

The Mavic is the better drone, smaller, lighter, better range speed and sensors, actually as far as the drone itself, its not even close. DJI make the best drones in the world, period.

The camera? The jury is out on that right now, I need to field test both before I give my conclusion.

Value for money? I have to give this to GoPro, the Karma with the controller and screen the grip handle system and included carry case really is good value for money.

Stacking everything up at the moment, I’m getting myself the Mavic, but Ill keep you posted as I test the Mavic and the Karma and get more information.

UPDATE:

My Mavic PRO has arrived and I have posted a review video (at top)

Update 2: GoPro have issued a recall on all 2,500 Karma’s sold  because of a power failure causing crashes.

The big question that has always been on everyone’s lips since DJI started shipping the Phantom 4: “Is the camera any better?” To find out, I took to the skies with a Phantom 3 Pro, a Phantom 4 AND an Inspire 1 X3 (X5 wouldn’t be a fair comparison as this camera alone costs more than any of the Phantoms). To make it fun, I decided to fly all of the drones at once at the same time. This way I was capturing the same scene at the same time, under the same lighting conditions.

Check it the video here and watch behind the scenes as I fly these 3 drones at the same time, it’s a lot of fun!

Rather than get into a big discussion about what I think is better and why, I have provided the images for you to examine yourself. I came back the next day and shot the images with exactly the same camera settings on each.

These are unprocessed images, directly out of the drone cameras.

Inspire 1

As you can see, the images look a little different even though they all had the same settings. The zoom is different too because they have a different field of view with the Inspire 1 zooming in more than the others.

Lets have a closer look. Here I have cropped in to an area at 100% view

So there you go. I think the images from the Phantom 4 are notably sharper than that of the Phantom 3 pro. The other thing to note is that the processing speed of the Phantom 4 is much faster too, so if you are shooting bursts or bracketed shots, you’ll find you can shoot more rapidly. But, make up your own mind, download the RAW files from all 3 cameras and examine them for yourself.

How to Make a 360 Facebook Pano

There are a few things that you need to do, in order for Facebook to recognize youruploads as a 360, if you don’t include these, it won’t work.

  1. Aspect ration has to be 2:1 It has to be exactly 2x as wide as it is high. Example: If image is 1000px wide, it should be 500px high.
  2. Maximum upload size is 6000px width X 3000px height
  3. Must contain 360 Pano camera metadata. Many editing programs strip the metadata from a photograph. When using Photoshop either choose save as.. or use save for web, but ensure that you choose “all meta data” on export.
  4. If it wasn’t shot on a 360 camera, you need to add compatible camera metadata,  the most common is the Ricoh Theta S.

Adding Metadata

If you have stitched a pano shot from a non 360 camera, you need to edit the camera metadata to make it work. Photoshop. Lightroom and most editing apps won’t allow you to edit the EXIF data. In the video above I show you how to add the metadata using a free online website https://thexifer.net to edit the file. You simply add RICOH THETA S to the camera make and model.
